Veterans Day Event Round-Up

REGIONAL – Veterans Day is one of our country's most treasured holidays, one in which we celebrate the men and women, past and present, who have risked their lives to put on a uniform and fight for the betterment of the United States and the world at large. On November 11, our nation's veterans are congratulated and treated by entities large and small, from major corporations to small town government. Be it a parade, a breakfast buffet, or just a free coffee, people around the country make sure to show the vets their appreciation on this revered day — this is our opportunity to reflect on the great sacrifices that our veterans have made for this country.

Here is a taste of some of the many Veterans Day activities and ceremonies that will be taking place around our area. All events take place on Veterans Day, November 11, unless otherwise specified.

Accord: There will be a memorial ceremony taking place at Veterans Park at the Accord Town Hall starting at 11 a.m. Refreshments will be served after the ceremony. The park is located at 50 Scenic Road.

Bloomingburg: There will be two events taking place in town: A Veterans Day ceremony at 9 a.m. at VFW Post 4947 on 26 VFW Lane, and a ceremony at the Bloomingburg Firehouse starting at 9:30 a.m., to feature guest speaker the Hon. Frank LaBuda.

Ellenville: The Cook-Taylor American Legion Post 111, located at 180 South Main Street in Ellenville, will host a Veteran's Day Service event starting at 11 a.m.

Grahamsville: The Grahamsville Rural Cemetery on route 55 will sponsor a flag exchange ceremony, to take place at the cemetery. Dennis Ackerley from Memorial Post 8648 will provide honor guard.

High Falls: The High Falls VFW (Post 686) will be at Stewart's in Rosendale on Nov. 10, and Emmanuel's Marketplace on Nov. 11 with the Buddy Poppies for sale; proceeds from the distribution of the bright little red flower go directly to helping veterans in need.

Hurleyville: On November 19, the Sullivan County Historical Society will host an exhibit titled "Celebrating Sullivan County Veterans" from 2 to 4 p.m. The exhibit will feature uniforms and memorabilia from the Civil War through Desert Storm, and will have a section dedicated to legendary local veteran Francis Currey, one of the only living recipients of the Medal of Honor left from World War II. The Sullivan County Museum is located at 265 Main Street in Hurleyville, and can be reached by calling 434-8044 or visiting www.scnyhistory.org.

Marbletown: The Marbletown American Legion, Post 1512, extends an invitation to the community to attend its Annual Veterans Day ceremony. The service will begin at 11 a.m. at the Marbletown Community Center on 3564 Main Street (Rt. 209) in Stone Ridge, and will include services to honor veterans by the Cub Scouts from Pack 16 and Boy Scouts from Troop 16. The Legion will also be accepting unserviceable American flags for retirement.

Monticello: A collection of veteran's groups — The Ruddick Trowbridge Post #73, The American Legion, The Jesse Brams Post #206, Jewish War Veterans and The Bailey-Richman Post #9588, Veterans of Foreign Wars — will be joining forces to host a Veteran's Day service at the Sullivan County Government Center that will feature keynote speaker Gary Schacher, incoming candidate for New York State Commander of The American Legion for the 2018 – 2019 Administrative Year. Refreshments will follow at the Monticello Elks Lodge.

The event is hosted by the Community Garden Club of Pine Bush.

Socks — preferably black, green, tan or brown, not white — can be donated at the library anytime between now and November 11. Also at the library, throughout the day on Friday the 10 is a Veteran's Day Troop Card Makerspace, where folks can craft a one-of-a-kind card to be sent to a soldier this holiday season.

The American Legion Rose Sheeley Post 1034 will also be conducting a short ceremony at 11 a.m. on Saturday at the Wallkill Public Library. The event will include an address by guest speaker Colonel Michael Davey, Retired, as well as an instructional program by members of the Post.
